Robert Murray M’Cheyne on the Christian Life — The Beauty of Christ and the Pursuit of Holiness
CHRIST-CENTERED DEVOTION. HOLINESS. THE WORD. THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT.

The Beauty of Christ and the Pursuit of Holiness
Robert Murray M’Cheyne (1813–1843), the Scottish minister associated with Dundee, continues to challenge Christian readers through his pastoral seriousness, prayerful preaching, evangelistic concern, and evident delight in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Joab Rico's developing historical-theological manuscript asks how a deep vision of Christ's saving beauty shaped M’Cheyne's pursuit of holiness and pastoral ministry. It follows connections among the gospel, the believer's communion with God, Scripture, prayer, preaching, assurance, and compassionate concern for souls.
A historical pastor, not a manufactured legend
This project seeks to attend closely to M’Cheyne's surviving sermons, letters, and the work of editors and biographers. It distinguishes historically documented testimony from later devotional retellings, and it treats claims about his spiritual life with the care appropriate to an authentic historical biography.
The book is being written for pastors, students of evangelical history, teachers, and thoughtful Christians who want to grow in the knowledge of Christ and understand the relationship between gospel assurance, holiness, and love for others.
How this book joins the historical theology collection
Alongside Joab Rico's author-led studies of Howell Harris and Charles Wesley, this volume belongs to the Christian History and Books in Development collection. Harris and Wesley represent eighteenth-century Welsh and English evangelical renewal; M’Cheyne belongs to a later nineteenth-century Scottish context. Their shared emphasis on Christ does not erase those historical differences.
Publication status
An eighteen-chapter working manuscript has been prepared for further editorial review. Source and quotation verification, independent reading, copyediting, indexes, final typesetting, and cover permissions remain part of the work ahead. This is an independently developed forthcoming project, not a book currently available for purchase or a title accepted by Crossway or another publisher.
The Scottish-blue preview artwork shown above is a design concept drawn from the existing author project library. The definitive approved cover and portrait permissions will be confirmed before final publication.
